1. 授業の内容(Course Description)
AMERICAN DREAM / AMERICAN NIGHTMARE
The world has a love / hate relationship with the United States, the country which is the leading source of influence for rapid global change. The US has fulfilled the "dreams"of many people throughout its history. At the same time, American civilization sometimes clashes with traditional cultures and different political systems of the world and is seen by many as a "nightmare." This seminar will examine key aspects of the US as a way to increase participants' understanding of American civilization and as a basis for examining both the positive and the negative sides of the country, especially from a Japanese perspective. (Two course sequence)

授業の到達目標(Course Objectives)
To examine key aspects of American Studies.
To contemplate what may be the positive aspects and the negative aspects of the US.
To prepare and present individual oral presentations in English relevant to the theme of the course.
To enhance English language speaking, listening, and reading skills.

成績評価方法(Grading Policy)
Final grades are calculated on the basis of 50% for class participation and 50% for student presentations.

Student presentations in class. Instructions and mini-lectures from instructor.
5.
授業時間外の学習《準備学習》(Assignments)
Each student will make two presentations in English. Students may choose from a list of selected topics or propose a topic of their choosing.
6.
学生への要望・その他(Class Requirements)
Class participation grades are based on attendance, active involvement in class, quality of work, effort, and attitude. Students must actively participate in discussions and listen to students presentations followed by questions and discussion.
