1. Course Description
The occurrence of students with a variety of cultural backgrounds is increasing in classrooms in Japan. This circumstance requires an understanding of, and emphasis on, Multicultural Education in all schools. In order to prevent or limit friction and conflict among students of various cultures, it is essential that teachers develop a sense of appreciation of multicultural education. Students in this course learn the basic philosophy behind multicultural education, its history, current practices, and barriers to implementation in classrooms around the world and in Japan. Students will explore the possibilities of the role multicultural education plays in support of intercultural communication.
