1. Course Description
Ethnic minorities in Japan face an array of problems, most of which affect educational performance. Teachers must have an understanding of these groups in order to develop strategies to cope with these problems. Many of the minorities are descendants of Japanese emigrants to foreign countries. In this course, students will examine the histories of Japanese emigrant populations to Hawaii, North America, and South America. Students will also study the Japanese Brazilian immigrants and the problems they face in modern Japanese society with particular emphasis on their educational progress.
