Course Description |

The U.S. economy that is the leading and active market economy in the world has poverty-stricken people more than 10% at various times. What is the "poverty" in American economy? How is it defined, how is it measured, and how have the governments; the Federal, States, and Local, coped with these problems? This course examines these aspects of the American economy from economic theory and policy. We get understandings on those questions by way of learning through discriminations in the labor markets and in education.
The following topics will be discussed; Inequality, Discrimination, and Poverty; World poverty and inequality; Labor force participation; Working poor; Age, health and family; Underclass; Discrimination in education; Discrimination in labor market; Welfare programs and reform; Employment policy; Equal opportunity policy; Future perspectives.
Grading policy: Attendance (30%), Mid-term exams (a small quiz)(30%), Final Exam (or Term Paper) (40%)
