1. Course Description
<Culture and Society through the Spread of Coffee and Chocolate>

Not only the current luxury indulgences and expectations of health benefits, coffee and chocolate have played diverse roles in terms of cultural transformation throughout history, including their use in rituals and as medicines, currency, and articles of trade. By exploring the worldwide history of coffee and cacao, we will gain insights into social constructs such as politics, trade, child labor, and café culture. In aiming to enhance students’ ability to research, think critically, present, and discuss, this course encourages students to perform group work and deliver presentations.
