This course concentrates on exchanges, cultural and otherwise, between Japan and the rest of the world in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Much attention will be paid to diplomatic relations and cultural exchanges. The spring covers the period between the opening of Japan in 1854 and the outbreak of the First World War in 1914.
