1. Course Description
One of the most important contemporary issues in Japan is the population decrease which will continue for many years as a consequence of long-lasting low fertility accompanied by rapid ageing. Concentration of population in major cities, especially in Tokyo, is also big concern. These issues are not simply demographic matters but also problems related to economic and social conditions. An objective of this seminar is to study the recent demographic issues and their consequences on Japan’s society and economy. The participants in this seminar are expected to develop their ability to understand these issues through reading the literature, making reports and discussion.
