Web Syllabus(講義概要)

This course (composed of Development Finance III in the spring semester and Development Finance IV in the autumn semester) deals with the development finance issues of the developing countries in Asia. A robust and efficient financial system promotes sustainable development by channeling resources to their most productive and effective use, thereby fostering more efficient resource allocation. Effective financial mobilization internally or externally, and adequate use of these financial resources are some of the key issues in developing countries.

Development Finance III will mainly discuss the financial sector development in developing countries in Asia, while Development Finance IV will discuss how developing Asian countries should mobilize development financial resources in support of sustainable development purposes. The course is participatory so that students are encouraged to participate actively in the class discussions.

This is an introductory course. By the end of Development Finance III, students will be able to understand the importance of finance for sustainable devepment in developing countries and the current development status of the financial sector in developing countries.

Grades will be evaluated based on class participation (60%), which includes attendance and the degree of participation in the discussions, quality of presentations and short essays, and the final report (40%).

“Financing Asia’s Future Growth” in “Asian Development Outlook 2015” (which can be downloaded from Asian Development Bank home page) would be a good reference reading for this course. Other reading materials will be provided by the lecturer.

Students are expected to do advanced reading of the reference materials provided by the lecturer.

Being an introductory course, no pre-conditions are needed. Students will be asked to make short presentations and submit short essays on the assigned topics. Students are expected to actively participate in classes.
