This course is an introduction to modern Japanese history. This semester we will cover the period between the end of the Edo period（1854）and the First World War（1914-18）.
Much attention will be given to politics, foreign relations, society and culture.

There are two objectives: 1）familiarize foreign students with modern Japanese history and 2）improve English language skills of Japanese students.
