Web Syllabus(講義概要)

　Course description: I am expecting students not only to research about all kinds of monsters, ghosts, zombies, vampires etc. in Western literature and film but to compare their findings to Japanese literature (monstrous beings, phantoms, mythology), anime and manga as well as Asian/Chinese sources. This seminar continues the seminar themes of utopia (2016) and robots (2017). As we will make a book as a final class project, I expect students to be motivated to use English as a working language throughout the seminar.
　このゼミでは西洋文学や映画の中でモンスター、お化け、ゾンビ、吸血鬼等をあらゆる角度から検討します。さらに日本の文学「妖怪、幽霊、神話学」、アニメ、漫画、その他アジア／中国の文学や映画と比較することも研究します。2018年度ゼミでは、ユートピア（2016年度）とロボット（2017年度）をゼミテーマとして続けていきます。英語を積極的に使うことに興味を持ってください。秋学期の終わりでは、上記のテーマについてゼミ生全員で本を完成させる予定です。

　Students will research a particular writer/director/poet/manga artist/musician or historical period and give regular presentations. We will connect and discuss contemporary issues linked to robots etc. It is hoped students will make a class book in the second semester.

　宿題（30％）class、presentation 1（30％）and book contribution（40％）
　注意：3回以上の欠席は基本的に不可とする。遅刻は20分まで。遅刻3回で欠席1回とみなします。
　　　　できるだけ授業に毎回出席してください。

　Students are expected to be active in class, prepare research outside of class, and voice opinions in class.

　Homework is a must. Coming to class is a must. Coming to class on time is a must. Participation is a must. Dictionaries and notebooks a must.
　A strict attendance policy will be observed. Be warned!
　Students in this class are expected to be active and autonomous in learning English. This is not a class for passive students who want an easy credit.
　Students are expected to attend class, do homework, contribute to the book project. Failure to do so will mean failure from the course.
