This is an introductory class for German language. The aim of this class is to build a basis for communication in German while learning basic grammar. For example, students are expected to learn greeting, self-introduction, and basic daily conversation in shopping. Moreover, German history and culture are also taught in this class because learning a language is to understand “perspectives” and “the way of thinking” of the people living in the country where the language is used. This is another aim of this class. Students are expected to touch upon the world view and ideas of German people, which are reflected on the language. The class proceeds with the assigned textbook. It is desirable, however, to attend every class since a lot of important information which is not written in the textbook will be mentioned during the class time. It is above all important to develop a “feeling for language,” or to acquire a sense of language. In this class, priority is given to acquiring the sense and getting used to the grammar rather than mere memorization. Group activities such as role playing will be incorporated in the class. It is desirable that students, as a result, get used to the German language to the point of remembering most of the phrases while practicing. Homework and quizzes will be given to assess students’ progress. This course is related to educational goals 1, 2, and 3 of General Basic Subjects.

2. |
Objectives |
|
This class will allow students to improve their communication skills that are required in various fields. Students will also be able to develop a wider perspective and deeper understanding of other countries and to gain the ability to respond to international requirements.
