1.
Outline
The purpose of the class is to throw a bridge across a river between an introductory level and an intermediate level to help students move into a higher level. Students are expected to expand their knowledge of basic German grammar learned during the first year, and to improve overall language skills in various practices. This class also helps students get a deeper understanding of German culture, history and philosophy. Germany has its own history of development in the field of music, literature, philosophy, arts, design and so on. Students are also expected to gain the ability to respond to international requirements. Germany is a technological superpower which is famous for the automotive industry, the development of recycle system and natural energy, to name a few. It may be useful to learn German language for students who will assume leadership roles in next-generation technology. Learning a foreign language is to open up various possibilities. If you are thinking about writing a graduation thesis on environmental issues or urban development, you might be able to find beneficial information you are looking for, which cannot be found in Japanese or English literature. The aim of the class is not just learning “practical usage” of language, but also learning the current trends and issues together with the culture, history, and philosophy as the background for the present.

Students will read various texts to move into a higher level. Students also learn how to use an electric dictionary, dictionaries on the Web, and the various learning methods on the Web, and how to access German information on the internet. Activities using CD and DVD might be incorporated in the class.
This course is related to educational goals 1, 2, and 3 of General Basic Subjects.
2.
Objectives
This class will help students develop a wider perspective and get a deeper understanding of other countries, and gain the ability to respond to international requirements. Students will also be able to improve their communication skills that are necessary in various fields.
