Outline
This course deals with lectures, presentation and discussion in English and aims to
1. Read papers and text books explaining biological issues.
2. Read selected papers published in international magazines such as Science, Nature, Cell and PNAS as well as newspaper featuring articles in bioscience and environmental science.
3. Explain their own research themes referring to the related papers
The aim of this course is to help students acquire the DP2 and DP4 related knowledge and performance.

Objectives
At the end of the course, participants are expected to
(1) Enhance students' English proficiency and development of academic study skills and their ability to think critically which is required for graduate students and researchers retained by a bioscience-related company.
(2) Explain scientific issues such as their own research themes in English.

Grading Policy
Your final grade will be calculated according to the following process: Oral examination of each class (40%), presentation (30%), term-end examination (30%).

Textbook:Training of scientific English using Nikkei Science - Novel prized, Editors of Nikkei Science (2015) Nikkei Science, ISBN978-4-532-52070-0

5.
Requirements (Assignments)
(1) Students are expected to read the corresponding sections of the textbook and write down keywords on the notebook prior to each class. (30 min)
(2) Students should review the key points of each class on the notebook. (60 min)

Note
Please carry the English-Japanese dictionary and the Japanese-English dictionary. Electronic dictionary also can be used.

Schedule
1. The first half of each class is the lecture of the textbook. The second half of each class concerns the following issues.
What is academic papers? Types, structures, point of reading, references, and how to search literature

2. English newspaper articles of bioscience field (1): Structure of the article and technical terms

3. English newspaper articles of bioscience field (2): Lecture of some special phrases

4. English newspaper articles of bioscience field (3): Readings and recognition of the issue

5. Academic papers, original papers in an international journal (1): Structure of the article and technical terms

6. Academic papers, original papers in an international journal (2): Learning the basis of the article

7. Academic papers, original papers in an international journal (3): Readings and recognition of the issue

8. Academic papers, review papers in an international journal (1): Structure of the article and technical terms

9. Academic papers, review papers in an international journal (2): Learning the background of the article

10. Academic papers, review papers in an international journal (3): Readings and recognition of the issue

11. Presentation in English: review the research themes and related articles in Japanese

12. Presentation in English: Search and read the related papers

13. Presentation in English: Search and find the appropriate phrases in the related papers

14. Presentation in English: Translation of the presentation paper in Japanese to in English

15. Presentation in English: Oral presentation of research, discussion, question-and-answer session, and review in English
