Outline
The purpose of the class is to throw a bridge across a river between an introductory level and an intermediate level to help students move into a higher level. Students will be expected to expand their knowledge of basic German grammar learned in the first year, and to improve overall language skills with various practices.
This class also helps students to get a deeper understanding of German culture, history, and philosophy. Germany has its own history of development in the field of music, literature, philosophy, arts, design and so on. The aim of the class is not only learning “practical usage” of language, but also learning the current trends and issues together with the culture, history, and philosophy as the background.
Students will also be expected to gain the ability to respond to international requirements. Germany is a technological superpower which is famous for the automotive industry, the development of recycle system, and natural energy, to name a few. It may be useful to learn German language for students who will assume leadership roles in next-generation technology.
Learning a foreign language is to open up various possibilities. If you are thinking about writing a graduation thesis on environmental issues or urban development, you might be able to find beneficial information you are looking for, which cannot be found in Japanese or English literature.

Students will read various texts to move into a higher level. Students will also learn how to use an electric dictionary, dictionaries on the Web, various learning methods on the Web, and how to access German information on the internet. Activities using CD and DVD will be incorporated in the class.
This course is related to educational goals 1, 2, and 3 of General Basic Subjects.

Objectives
This class will help students to develop a wider perspective and get a deeper understanding of other countries, and gain the ability to respond to international requirements. Students will also be able to improve their communication skills that are necessary in various fields. The ability of logical thinking will also be gained by analyzing grammatical structures and reading logical sentences.

Grading Policy
Final exam: 40%
presentation: 20%
Homework, work sheet and mid-term exam: 20%
Classroom participation(active attitude toward study, willing stance toward pair works, and contribution to class activities): 20%

Students will receive feedback when homework and mid-term exams are returned. Questions about German are welcome anytime.

Textbook and Reference
Resumes will be provided in each class.
5.
Requirements (Assignments)
1. Students should prepare for the class by previewing the designated section in the textbook and check words and grammar appearing there for 30 minutes. Students should read texts when they are provided, and analyze the reason for the mistakes.
2. Students should review what is learned for 30 minutes after class, doing homework when assigned.
3. Students will be expected to exercise by using CD for 30 minutes each day.
4. Question note in learning is recommended.

Note
This course is planned for students who already finished the introductory classes for German language, or students who possess the ability to use German language to the extent equivalent to the students who completed the course German 1 and 2. Be ambitious and love challenges, however!
