Outline
The purpose of this course is to consider elements that shape modern school education through going back to their roots. In the first half of this series of lectures, we survey the historical development of modern school education in Europe. In the latter part, we survey Japanese education from the Edo to the early Showa eras. In particular, the acceptance and development of modern school education are introduced. At the end, we consider education in present-day from the view which we learned through this course.
This course is designated to achieve educational goals 1, 2, and 3 of General Basic Subjects.

Objectives
The goals of this course are to
(1) Explain the characteristics of education in various periods in history with consideration of historical background.
(2) Explain historical factors of formation of education in present-day.
(3) Consider education from the perspective of history.

Grading Policy
Your overall grade will be decided based on the following:
- One Page Portfolios: 50%
- Group discussion and presentation: 10%
- Term-end examination: 40%

Textbook and Reference
Will be introduced in the class.
5.
Requirements (Assignments)
(1) Before class, read the relevant part of the textbook and look up terms that you do not know the meaning by using encyclopedias, and fill in the before-class task section of the portfolio (about 30 minutes).
(2) After class, organize and review notes and handouts. Then, summarize the points in the portfolio and undertake the after-class task (about an hour).
(3) One Page Portfolios are always reviewed upon their return. Then, if there is a misunderstanding (especially in the case of C rating or less), review it with your own notes and the references shown in the document, and undertake the task again (about an hour).
