Outline
  In this course students will learn that our daily lives are governed by economic rules. First of all, they comprehend the basic mechanism of the capitalist economy in comparison with the planned economy. Then they will learn about the composition of household expenditure using “Statistics of Household Survey”. It is very different by the type of household, such as a single person, a family with only a couple, a nuclear family with minor children, a single elderly, etc. This shows us a severe difference between the rich and the poor. Students also study how such a composition has been changing in accordance with economic fluctuations. This course is related to Diploma Policy 1, 2, 3.

Objectives
  Through analyzing the households’expenditure, students will understand some facts. For example, there are rather severe gap between the rich and the poor, as a result of the increase of irregular male workers. The consumption increased rapidly in the 1960s until 1980s, and Japanese life style changed from Asian style to Western style during those decades. But from the 1990s the consumption level of ordinary Japanese has been declining. Students also will find many changes which have influenced households economic situation, such as the increase of working women, the increase of single person household, the percentage of expenditure for mobile phones has been increasing, etc. Such changes are closely linked with the mutation of social structure.
