Outline
This course aims to help students improve all four English language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) comprehensively while focusing on elementary-level grammar structures. Also, this course aims to help students acquire an ability to express themselves in a limited way in familiar situations.

This course is composed of individual learning on the LMS (the first-fifth classes) and face-to-face classes (the sixth-10th classes on the first day of schooling; the 11th-15th classes on the second day of schooling).

This course is also designed to achieve Learning Goals 1, 2, and 3 of the General Basic Subjects, incorporating active learning.

Objectives
The purpose of this course is to enable students to learn elementary level grammar and improve their English proficiency. By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. acquire elementary-level grammar structures and apply them to practical communication.
2. understand beginner-level passages on general topics and the ones of their interest.
3. understand the major points of slow-spoken speech on general topics and the ones of their interest.
4. speak about the ordinary incidents of daily life and the topics of their interest even with some awkwardness.

Grading Policy
Exercises on the LMS, etc. (20%), Participation (20%), and Examination (1) & (2) (60%)

・Students' progress in the exercises,etc. on the Learning Management System (LMS) will be evaluated by their records of the results on the LMS. (On the LMS, when a student starts watching the video of the explanations on a content, the teacher can also see that she/he is watching it. When she/he inputs answers, the rate of correct answers will be presented to the teacher. Students' activities are monitored by the LMS and the teacher will grade the results on the screen.)
・The participation of students is graded according to the responses when being called on during schooling. (Students are supposed to have watched the videos on the LMS and check the correct answers to questions in exercises before attending the schooling.
・Examination (1) stands for the written examination given at the end (fifth class) of the first day of schooling, and Examination (2) of the second day. (Thirty percent of the total grade will be given to each examination.)

Requirements (Assignments)
1.First-fifth classes: personal study of the contents on the LMS
[Preparatory Study]
(1) Students will watch the videos of the explanations on learning items in the textbook. You can watch and listen to the teacher's explanations and writings on the screen.
(2) Next, you will go to the exercise pages and input your answers. When you submit the answers, the percentage of correct answers will be shown. You should try answering the questions until you will get 100% for correct answers. If you keep watching the video of the explanations, clues to the correct answers will be found. (45 minutes)
[Review]
As for wrong answers, the explanatory video should be watched again. (15 minutes)

2. Sixth-15th classes: schooling
[Preparatory Study]
Students will read the textbook and answer the questions before class (Unit 1-4 for the first day of schooling; Unit 5-8 for the second day). The explanatory videos on the LMS will give you the clues to the correct answers. Dictionaries can also help you. (30-60 minutes)
[Review]
Concerning wrong answers, students will clarify why mistakes occurred, and practice giving right answers (during breaks or the time to study for examinations).

Students are supposed to bring in English-Japanese and Japanese-English dictionaries for each class. (Either paper or electronic dictionaries are OK.)
