Outline
We will use a textbook to develop reading skills and do some exercises to check the students' comprehension of the text and to develop vocabulary. Some of the exercises are designed to help the student learn English listening comprehension and speaking ability. This class is designed to achieve Learning Goals 1, 2, and 3 of the General Basic Subjects, incorporating active learning.

Students will read passages on cultural differences between the U.S. and Japan. Concerning the text, the questions about the picture related to the theme of the unit will first be answered in English. Second, the model reading of the text will be listened to. Third, students will read the text aloud after the teacher. Fourth, each student will be called on to read a few sentences aloud. Fifth, the pronunciations and meanings of the words or expressions that can not be read will be clarified. Sixth, the comprehension questions about the text will be answered.

As for vocabulary, students will find the words from the text that match the given definitions. Next, the derivatives of the words will be written in the blanks of the given sentences. Regarding grammar, students will do a word rearrangement exercise and a TOEIC style grammar exercise. With a dialogue, they practice listening, answer comprehension questions, and perform the dialogue in pairs.

At the beginnings of most classes, a short free composition will be conducted in five minutes. In the 12th class, the task of a long composition in the formal writing style on the experience/opinion/interest of students will be given.

Objectives
The purpose of this course is to enable students to attain an advanced level of proficiency in English. By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. read and understand the gists of a low-intermediate level reading of approximately
 400 words, including low-intermediate level grammar.
2. listen to a clearly spoken conversation.
3. orally express their thought with a few sentences about a simple topic.
4. write six sentences in five minutes. (A subject-verb set with proper word order will be
 counted as one sentence.)
5. write a composition of no fewer than 100 words on their own experience, etc. with the
 proper uses of conjunctions and adverbs for formal writing.

Grading Policy
Final examination (60%), Composition in the formal writing style, etc (20%), short free compositions (10%), and participation (10%)

・The composition in the formal writing style and short free compositions will be
 returned through the LMS with grades and corrections.
・The participation of students is graded according to the responses when being called
 on and the degree of participation in the pair work practicing the dialogues in the
 textbook. (If a student do not participate in the pair work, 10 points will be taken from
 his/her total grade.)

Requirements (Assignments)
[Preparation with the textbook]
1. Students will look at the picture and write answers in English to the questions. (5 minutes)
2. The section "Reading" will be read through for the understanding of the main idea with the help of notes. You should consult the dictionaries for the meanings of unknown expressions hindering your understanding. (20 minutes)
3. Choose the correct words for the blanks of the section "True or False." Next, judge whether each sentence is True or False. (10 minutes)
4. The model reading of the section "reading" should be listened to for identifying the pronunciations of new expressions for you. (10 minutes)
5. As for "Word in Context," you will find the words on the specific lines in the reading that match the given synonyms or definitions. (10 minutes)
6. As for "Word Forms," you will change the forms of the words given as the answers to 5, and fill in the blanks of the specific sentences.

It is difficult to find the accurate derivatives, but there are some ways. (Paper dictionaries are likely to show derivatives after the explanations of the meanings of words. In using electronic dictionaries, you will often find the derivatives after the meanings by scrolling down the screen. The page of the word list may have the target derivative close to the given word. (15 minutes)

7. Concerning "Rearranging," you will rearrange the words in brackets to complete sentences. (5 minutes)
8. Regarding "Incomplete Sentence," you will choose the correct expressions for the blanks in the given sentences. (10 minutes)
9, For the section of "Dialogue," the lines in the dialogue, the questions, and the options for the answers will be read through, and unfamiliar expressions should be looked up in the dictionaries for their meanings. (10 minutes)

[Review]
1. Check new expressions for you in the textbook and memorize their meanings. (10 minutes)
2. Practice giving correct answers without the support of "Notes," especially to the mistaken questions during class. Writing the difficult answers on paper repeatedly (e.g. "Word Forms" and "Rearranging") is recommended because the process of writing facilitates your recall. (20 minutes)
3. The expressions in the dialogues selected for the final examination should also be written down on paper for recall.(10 minutes)
4. You will check your grades and corrections of short free compositions and the long composition through the LMS on your smartphones, etc. (5 minutes)

[How to Write the Composition in the Formal Writing Style]
In class, the handouts on the formal writing style and the example compositions will be distributed. Next, the directions for the exercises of formal writing will be given and you will work on the exercises. Examining the model compositions, you will think about your topic for this task.

After class, you will write a composition on the topic you have selected with no less than 100 words with the help of dictionaries. When the first draft is completed, reread your writing and check whether there are any mistaken uses of conjunctions or adverbs. Finally, correct your mistakes if any for the submission. (40-60 minutes)

・Students are supposed to bring in English-Japanese and Japanese-English dictionaries for each class. (Either paper or electronic dictionaries are OK. If you are an exchange student, the dictionaries that translate English into your mother tongue and vice versa are preferable.)
・The feedback on the LMS should regularly be checked, although the time when a short free composition is returned will be announced.

・It is a long road to master a foreign language, but the effort you make will surely improve your communicative ability in the language even little by little. Your solid progress will steadily broaden the possibilities for yourself. I hope that this course will enhance your reading ability in English and enlarge your vocabulary.
