Web Syllabus(講義概要)

　This class considers the visual representations and images of "Japan", transcultural Japan and Japaneseness in 20th century cinema, art, manga, anime, music, news, literature and TV. We will look at both representations of "Japan" and Japaneseness from both inside and outside Japan (Hollywood and global TV) to challenge and deconstruct prevalent racist, gender, classist and sexist stereotypes about Japaneseness and Japanese alterity.
　This class - to be conducted in English - is a unique chance for international students and Japanese students with English competence to work together in a friendly, collaborative, student-centered and discussion-focussed setting. As all students will interact on group projects, students must participate actively in class.

　Although the class will be mostly conducted in English it is not an English language class. Rather, students will use English in class to discuss contemporary issues critically and creatively. This class is therefore about active learning and active critical thinking.

　Your final grade will be based on the following:
　　　25%　Participation and Preparedness
　　　25%　Quizzes and Writing Assignments
　　　50%　Mid-term and Final Examinations/report

　You are expected to come to class fully prepared.
　予習・復習は必須。予習をしている前提で授業を進める。

　Homework is a must. Coming to class is a must. Coming to class on time is a must. Participation is a must. Dictionaries and notebooks a must.
　A strict attendance policy will be observed. Be warned!
　Students in this class are expected to be active and autonomous in learning English. This is not a class for passive students who want an easy credit.
　Students are expected to attend class, do homework, prepare for tests and presentations. Failure to do so will mean failure from the course.
