Web Syllabus(講義概要)

　PURPOSE and OVERALL CONTENTS:
　This class, offered in English, intends to make students familiar with basic characteristics and nature of the Japanese economy and management.
　Japanese economy and business achieved unprecedented high economic growth in 1960s and 1970s. Since mid 1980s, Japanese system of economy, management, and society overall experienced mature and slow growth. We will learn in this course some of the important aspects of the Japanese economy, and problems which Japanese business world is and will be facing in the future.

　OBJECTIVES of the COURSE:
　Students will get basic understanding of the current situation and problems in the Japanese economy.
　By discussing and comparing the Japanese economy with other economies, like that of the U.S., China, India, and EU, students will be able to explain fundamental characteristics of the workings of the Japanese economy.

　GRADING POLICY:
　Class comment paper: 20％
　Short quizes (2): 40％
　Short term paper: 40％

　TEXTBOOK:
　M. Chang & K. Horiguchi,『An Insight into the Japanese Economy』 Sanshusha, 2014
　Also, occasional handouts will be distributed to supplement student's understanding and discussion.

　PREPARATION for CLASS:
　Each chapter of Chang & Horiguchi book should be read and well-prepared before each session every week. Class discussion will be based on those topics and related issues in each session from the C&H book.

　MESSAGE TO STUDENTS:
　This is NOT a "Lecture" course. Student's active participation in every ways is expected. Even though students with all levels of English competency are welcomed, question-and-answer, discussions, and interactions among students and with the instructor are essential parts of learning of students in this course.
