Course Description

Asia comprises the vast extension of geographical area, where extremely diverse peoples have lived out extremely diverse historical trajectories through the long stretch of time. To discuss the social history of Asia with due specificity, this series of lectures focuses on the modern history of India under the British Raj. Especially, the processes through which “Indian society” came to be constructed as "caste society" make the main theme for discussion. With due attention to the continuity with the dynamics in contemporary India, the making of modern India will be explored.
