Course Description

In this class, students who are going to study abroad for at least one semester from next September will learn basic facts about European modern history, mainly from the point of view of Nation-Sate building. When and how Nation-States appeared in Europe, and what are their characteristics? What makes someone “English”, or “German”, or “French”? Through case studies and examples taken from their destinations, students will be encouraged to think about those questions, in order to deepen their understanding of European societies, but meanwhile also of the Japanese society in which they live, and which is not estranged to these questions.
