Course Description

This course introduces the history of Japanese politics and diplomacy from the end of Edo period to the Pacific War. Mainly, this course deals with the establishment of the Meiji Constitutional System and the process of its development, and examine about the possibility and setback of democracy in the prewar period. Also, from the viewpoint that domestic politics and foreign relations are closely linked, we focus on not only domestic politics but also the international environment and the war carried out by "the Greater Japanese Empire".
