Course Description

This course examines cultural phenomena that arise in and around animation. In the world of visual cultures, motion pictures were dominant in the 20th century. In the mid- to late-century, television broadcasting emerged as a major player. And toward the end of the millennium, digital transmission of images via internet started. Even though these media are disparate, the method of presentation is basically the same. Movies, or moving images, whether it is a drama, a documentary, a variety show or news, are shown on a flat screen. We ask what sceneries present themselves if we see these phenomena through the lens of animation. We also ask the relationship between movies and animation. Do they exist side by side? Does one include the other? Or are they two separate art forms?
