Course Description

In this seminar, we will deepen our understanding of development economics in order to know how developing countries are progressing. For both developed and developing countries to coexist, it is necessary to understand different cultures each together through communication. Otherwise, it is difficult to find out the right way for our beneficial cooperation. In order to become opinion leaders in the future, our students at class need to understand the theory and methodology of development economics that can be also learned by people in developing countries. Despite its importance and seriousness, I would say learning and absorbing the knowledge of development economics is big fun!
In this course, (i) we first learn about the purpose of economic development and identify issues we have to study in order to achieve sustainable development. (ii) Second, we will analyze the issues stemming from economic theory and data. (iii) Last, I hope that students could express what issues and perspectives development economics has in their own words. The text we would be using is Economic Development by Michael P. Todaro and Stephen Smith. Following the lecture, students will be asked to present their own opinions during the seminar and will receive feedback accordingly.
