Course Description

This course offers students an in-depth examination of key positions in the early modern and modern Japanese history of political thought. It is designed to help students to engage in an informed discussion about the Japanese history of political thought in their future professions.

The second part of this course will focus on the political treatises edited under the title "An Encouragement for Learning" (Gakumon no susume, 1872-1876) by the Meiji-period educator and political philosopher Fukuzawa Yukichi (1835-1901).
