Course Description

Knowledge of linguistics is very useful for the students studying a language to gain a deeper understanding of the language. The topics in this semester include: what is language; how human language is evolved; branches of linguistics; how to read, understand, and utilize information in a dictionary; lexicology, external and internal history of English language; morphology and Germanic, Romanic and Greek origins; semantic relations (synonymy, antonymy, and so on), subtle differences of synonyms; British and American English; syntax based on functional and cognitive linguistics and good-old-day-style generative grammar.
