Course Description

We are going to look mainly at the concept of the alien in British literature (H.G. Wells) and science fiction and film through the imaginary of 19th and 20th century writers. I am expecting students not only to research about the notion of the alien (time and space, inhuman, animal etc)but to compare their findings to Japanese literature, anime and manga as well as Asian/Chinese sources. The seminar continues the previous year’s seminar themes of utopia, robot and monster. As we will make a book as a final class project, I expect students to be motivated to use English as a “working language” throughout the seminar.
