Course Description

Today, there is a growing interest in the "Indo-Pacific region," which includes the Indian Ocean, the South China Sea and the Western Pacific. In the autumn semester of this course, we aim to understand the history and the present situation of international relations in this "Indo-Pacific region," focusing on India and the South Asian region. We study the following topics: (1) foreign policy of India since its independence, (2) politics, society and economy of the South Asian countries other than India, (3) regional cooperation among the South Asian countries, and (4) international relations in the Indo-Pacific region. I will give you a quiz at the end of each class, so that you can check your understanding and express your own opinions on the topics discussed.
