Course Description

Wood has been used in various applications around the world since the primitive age due to its easy availability and good workability. Wood, which is more easily decorated than stone or metal, has been carved for worship by various religions, and its surface has been decorated with gold, mineral pigments, etc. In Japan, it has become the main material of Buddha statues in ancient Buddhism, and a huge number of Buddha statues have been transmitted from ancient times to modern times.
In this class, students learn about the stylistic and technical changes of Egyptian, Italian and Japanese cultural property (or cultural heritage) made by processing wood, and how to conservation, restoration, and utilize them in modern times. I would like to learn and think about how to pursue, using survey methods, theories and methods using natural science methods.
