Course Description

This course is aimed at understanding the characteristics of raw materials and processing methods for arts and crafts in a point of material scientific view. For the fabrication of arts and crafts, obtaining raw materials and tools, the establishment of processing technology and channels of distribution are required. Therefore arts and crafts connote historical, cultural, ethnological and technical background. It is necessary to get knowledge of material and processing technology for considering the significance of cultural properties. In this course, the main materials used for arts and crafts are explained from material science viewpoint including production techniques. Although lectures include much scientific content, these are important opportunities to deepen understanding contact between historical and scientific research.
