Course Description

Japanese schools began teaching Life Environment Studies to first and second grade elementary students in 1989. Because of the nature of the subject, Life Environment Studies requires a different teaching approach than other social studies subjects. Therefore, this course serves to introduce Life Environment Studies history, background and significances to future teachers. In order to deeply understand the aims of establishing this subject and its character, and to develop a knowledge of teaching methods, students in this course will read “the course of study” (Gakushu-shido-yoryo), analyze textbooks, and observe examples of teaching practices.
