Course Description

This course deals with the economic history of Asia from pre-modern through modern period. We consider, at first, the network of “tributary system” in old days centered on China. Japan was also connected to the system even under its policy of “national isolation.” By studying the case of the Ryukyu islands, for example, we will explore the real situations of economic relations among Asian countries connected by seas in pre-modern period. Then we study the economic transformation of Asia in modern period. We will study the situations of trade, immigration, industry, agriculture and so forth in Asia after the western countries such as Britain embarked upon Asian market in the mid-19th century.
