Course Description

We are going to look mainly at the political concepts of surveillance, language, propaganda and fascism in British literature (H. G. Wells) and science fiction and film through the imaginary of 19th and 20th century writers. Students will compare their findings to Japanese literature, anime and manga as well as Asian/Chinese sources. The seminar continues the previous seminar themes of aliens, monsters robots and utopia. As we will make a book as a final class project, I expect students to be motivated to use English as a working language throughout the seminar.
