Course Description

This course introduces students to a selection of well-known literary works with movie adaptations. Through close reading of stories written by Louisa May Alcott, Ernest Hemingway and Truman Capote, this course examines how gender, sexuality, class, and other forms of otherness are represented and challenged in these texts. Film adaptations are used not only to boost students’ understanding, but also to provide insights into changes of values and perceptions by comparing with the original texts. As part of the teaching method, this course emphasizes the importance of understanding literary texts in their cultural and historical contexts. This course will also apply interactive teaching strategies which encourage students to make connections between literary texts and their reality, and compare the author’s cultural context with their own.
