Course Description

This class engages in reading folk-literature adopted in Fudoki (風土記 ancient records of the culture and geography of provinces of Japan). Fudoki is a report submitted by offices of each province to a central government by the Emperor's order issued in 713. Only five provinces’ Fudoki including Izumo(出雲)are existing today. Fudoki is very precious literature for us to know ancient times because it describes products and geography, origin of name of places and folk story inherited from old times. This class aims at studying the way of thought of an archaic society and ancient people through reading some folk-literature excerpted from Fudoki.
The class at the autumn semester reads Harima(播磨)Fudoki and the others.
