In the history of Japanese calligraphy, it is noteworthy that Japanese-style calligraphy was established under the influence of Chinese kanji calligraphy and that kana was created from kanji, and it can be said that Japanese culture was nurtured by such a writing culture of kanji and kana. In this class, we will focus on classical manuscripts from the Heian period and other surviving calligraphic artifacts to investigate their materiality and artistic value in the field of calligraphy.
