Course Description

This course introduces the history of Japanese funeral and tomb system from ancient age to modern age. From the Emperor to the ordinary people, how did the Japanese mourn the dead? This is an important theme related to the fundamental of the social formation such as the view of the Japanese death or living and the management of the deceased by the state. The primary aim of this course is to understand Japan as it is today through studying social history of Japan.
