Course Description

The Chinese economy has achieved rapid economic growth since the reform and opening policy that began in 1978, and is now the world's largest trader of goods and has the second largest GDP. In order to understand the current dramatic economic development, it is necessary to examine the changes in China's political society and economic system from a long-term perspective. In addition, since agriculture and providing an adequate food supply to a huge population is also an important factor for China's economic development, we will also look at the current state of industrialized Chinese agriculture to deepen our understanding.
This class will focus on the Chinese economy and in the first half of the year, we will focus on issues such as the companies and technologies that have become the bearers of growth, mainly in urban areas and industries. In the latter half of the year, we will explain in an easy-to-understand manner the problems of township and village enterprises, migrant workers and food, focusing on rural areas and agriculture that has been overlooked in light of the rapid growth of industry and manufacturing. At the same time, we will deepen our understanding through discussions of various harmful effects and new problems brought about by rapid economic growth.
