Course Description

This class will introduce other cultures, the relationship to others, as well as the basics of anthropology, the science of cultures and societies. The class will be based on reference texts and documentaries, around various themes. We will learn about different ways of living, understand the relativity of cultures.

The objective is to become aware of the relativity and diversity of cultures all around the world. To understand what is cultural within the Japanese society and the ordinary elements that seem « natural » to students. The objectives are to:
- think about the unity and diversity of human beings
- learn ethnographical methods
- acquire the ability to decenter and relativize one’s approach
