Course Description

This course aims to develop understanding the Japanese history of education.
Students will study the historical perspectives through the analysis with some issues related to education in modern Japan; for example, the role of government, teachers training system, textbooks, and children develop.
By the end of the course, students should be able to do the following:
(1) gain skills to read historical sources and relativize their own stereotypes of education.
(2) interpret the historical and uniquely Japanese development of educational events, their characteristics and social background, relating them to knowledge acquired in other courses(studies).
