Course Description

What is the global community? Should we distinguish it from the international community or society? Answering these questions is hard, even for professional scholars in the field of international relations. To understand the basic characteristics of the global and international community, this class in the second semester will focus on four basic topics that have something important to do with Human Security, a very important nontraditional issue in the global community : (1) the birth and spread of the concept of Human Security, and its relations to Responsibility to Protect, (2) why peacebuilding is needed and how it is conducted after international conflicts and civil wars, (3) immigration-related issues, especially putting premium on its roles in leveling the world in terms of economy, culture and society as a whole, and (4) refugee-related issues, mainly focusing on impacts on European societies that refugees from the Middle East have had in recent years.
