Course Description

This course offers an introduction into the classical Japanese written styles subsumed under the term "kanbun". Students can expect to acquire a basic familiarity with various styles of kanbun as well as basic knowledge about the cultural history of kanbun-literacy in Japan.

Note: This is not a course in Classical Chinese or the Chinese Classics; basic familiarity with Classical Japanese grammar is recommended; the use of a Classical Chinese-Japanese dictionary (kanwa jiten) is mandatory in class
