Course Description

The purpose of this course is to expose students to the entanglements of social and economic ideas between Japan and the other Asian countries. As the first Asian country that embraced the Western modern social sciences, Japan had played the role of a science hub that enabled intellectuals from other Asian countries to get in touch with the Western scholarship. The first part of the course sheds light on the experiences of the Chinese and Korean economists in Japan. The second part examines the empirical research of Japanese economists in Asia and their discourses over Asia from the prewar to the postwar era.
