This course examines Japanese Studies overseas, a discipline that aims to provide a mechanism to access Japan’s culture, society, and people in order to achieve a complete and holistic understanding of Japan. In the context of an underlying notion of “Japan - thoroughly analyzed,” this course will provide an overview of the historical development and current state of Japanese Studies in Europe, North America, Asia, the Pacific, and beyond. This course also examines the significance of the Japanese Studies communities overseas in terms of Japan’s foreign policy and soft power.
