授業の概要（ねらい）

　This class considers the visual representations and images of "Japan”, transcultural Japan and “Japaneseness” in 20th century documentary, art, manga, anime, music, news, literature and TV. We will look at both representations of “Japan” and Japaneseness from both inside and outside Japan to challenge and deconstruct prevalent racist, gender, classist and sexist stereotypes about Japaneseness.
　This class - to be conducted in English - is a unique chance for international students and Japanese students with English competence to work together in a friendly, collaborative, student-centered and discussion-focused setting. As all students will interact on group projects, students must participate actively in class.

授業の到達目標

　Although the class will be mostly conducted in English it is not an English language class. Rather, students will use English in class to discuss contemporary issues critically and creatively. This class is therefore about active learning and active critical thinking.

成績評価の方法および基準

　Your final grade will be based on the following:
　　　25%　Participation and Preparedness
　　　25%　Quizzes and Writing Assignments
　　　50%　Mid-term and Final Examinations
　注意：4回以上の欠席は基本的に不可とする。遅刻は20分まで。遅刻3回で欠席1回とみなします。
　　　　できるだけ授業に毎回出席してください。

　You are expected to come to class fully prepared.
　予習・復習は必須。予習をしている前提で授業を進める。

その他履修上の注意事項

　Homework is a must. Coming to class is a must. Coming to class on time is a must. Participation is a must. Dictionaries and notebooks a must.
　A strict attendance policy will be observed. Be warned!
　Students in this class are expected to be active and autonomous in learning English. This is not a class for passive students who want an easy credit.
　Students are expected to attend class, do homework, prepare for tests and presentations. Failure to do so will mean failure from the course.
