授業の概要（ねらい）

Cinema is closely linked to American history due to its ability to reconstruct past events and phenomena for viewers in the present to experience. Viewing films invites audiences to consider, reflect, and ultimately shape the future course of society. Cinema encapsulates the beliefs, values, struggles, and anxieties of specific communities and time periods, and presents us with fundamental philosophical and ideological questions. This course explores one of the most critical issues for America as a nation, “divide,” through analysis of select Hollywood films. The films screened in this course showcase two different views, or opposing attitudes, towards politics, social fashion, and institutions that have been deeply rooted in American society since the country’s founding. Students will learn to closely analyze a film while being attentive to the implications surrounding specific scenes or stories. The screenings, readings, and assignments in this course will not only train students to broaden their understanding of American history, but will also augment their English proficiency— particularly listening comprehension.

Thematic foci to be discussed in this course are counter-culture, civil liberty, racism, compassion, inclusion, collective society, and individual life. The films to be analyzed and discussed in this course include works created in the late 1960s up to as recently as 2017. Despite the long period of time over which these films were made, the films all have commonalities that make us ponder the future course of America as a “laboratory of democracy.” This lecture/discussion course is held in English.


映画は、過去の出来事や現象を再構築し、自省を通じて社会の流れを形作る能力を通じて、アメリカの歴史と密接に関連しています。映画はまた、特定のコミュニティや時代の信念、価値観、闘争、不安等を要約し、永続的にアメリカを分断する哲学的、イデオロギー的な問題を私たちの前に提示します。この授業では、建国以来アメリカ社会に深く根付いてきた政治、社会の流れ、制度に対する2つの異なる見方／向き合い方が描かれたハリウッド映画の分析を通じて、国としてのアメリカにとって最も重要な問題のひとつである「分断」について探っていきます。受講生は、映画の特定のシーンやストーリーを取り巻く影響に注意を払いながら、映画を綿密に分析・学習します。アメリカ史に関する受講生の理解を広げるだけでなく、特にリスニング能力の拡張を中心として、受講者の英語力を高めることも企図して、授業における映画視聴が実施され、また、関係資料の読解や課題提出等が課されます。

本講座で議論される主要テーマは、カウンターカルチャー、市民の自由権、人種差別、思いやり、包摂・共生、集団社会と個の人生です。このコースでは1960年代後半から2017年までに制作されたいくつかの作品をとりあげ、分析・議論しますが、長い期間にもかかわらず、これらの映画には共通点があり、授業ではこれらを通じて、「民主主義の実験室」としてのアメリカの将来について考えていきます。この授業は英語で行われます。

授業の到達目標

Upon meeting this course’s requirements, a student will be able to:
(1) Familiarize himself/herself with audible conversation in English and develop proficiency in listening comprehension,
(2) Develop proficiency in analyzing the structures of conversational English and the meaning behind these structures in specific contexts,
(3) Acquire basic knowledge about “Divided America” – culturally, racially, and politically,
(4) Explain post-2016 America in terms of the ideological/social divide by comparison with the turbulent 1960s.

(2) 英語の会話言語の構造、並びに特定の文脈におけるこれら構造の背後にある意味を分析する能力を高める
(3) 文化的、人種的、そして政治的に「分断された」アメリカについて基本的知識を獲得する
(4)（トランプ登場後の）2016年以降のアメリカについて、時代が激しく動いた1960年代と比較しつつ、イデオロギー的／社会的分断の観点から説明することができる

Attendance, participation, and punctuality are essential for this course. Students need to be on time, prepared to learn, and willing to participate. Film screenings start promptly; therefore, to avoid disruption, you must be on time. Missing class or arriving late will affect your overall course grade. Three unexcused absences and you are out.

この講義では、授業への出席、積極的な参加、時間厳守が不可欠です。受講者はしっかり予習をしたうえで、時間通りに教室に来て、積極的に参加する必要があります。授業開始後すぐに映画視聴を開始しますので、混乱を避けるために、受講者には時間厳守が求められます。欠席や遅刻は成績に影響します。 正当な理由のない欠席3回で不合格となります。
