授業の概要（ねらい）

Cinema is closely linked to American history due to its ability to reconstruct past events and phenomena for viewers in the present to experience. Viewing films invites audiences to consider, reflect, and ultimately shape the future course of society. Cinema encapsulates the beliefs, values, struggles, and anxieties of specific communities and time periods, and presents us with fundamental philosophical questions common to all humankind. This course explores several major themes of contemporary society through analysis of select Hollywood films. These films showcase defining historical periods in both American and World history, as well as their underlying cultural, social, and political issues. Students will learn to closely analyze a film while also being attentive to the implications surrounding the film’s specific scenes or stories. The screenings, readings, and assignments in this course will not only train students to broaden their understanding of American history, but will also augment their English proficiency— particularly listening comprehension.

Thematic foci that will be discussed in this course are discrimination, liberty, science, ethics, compassion, and human existence. The specific events and phenomena of the films that will be screened in this course include East-European Jewish migration to America in the late 19th Century, post-World War II scientific development, and the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. This lecture/discussion course is held in English.

映画は、過去の出来事や現象を再構築し、自省を通じて社会の流れを形作る能力を通じて、アメリカの歴史と密接に関連しています。映画はまた、特定のコミュニティや時代の信念、価値観、闘争、不安等を要約し、すべての人類に共通する根本的かつ哲学的な問題を私たちの前に提示したりもします。この授業では、アメリカ史と世界にとって非常に重要な時期を形作ったさまざまな文化的、社会的、政治的問題が取り上げられたハリウッド映画の分析を通じて、現代社会の主要テーマを探っていきます。受講生は、映画の特定シーンやストーリーを取り巻く含意に注意を払いながら、映画を綿密に分析・学習します。アメリカ史に関する受講生の理解を広げるだけでなく、特にリスニング能力の拡張を中心に受講者の英語力を高めることも企図して、授業における映画視聴が実施され、また、関係資料の読解や課題提出等が課されます。

本講座で議論される主要テーマは、差別、自由、科学と倫理、思いやり、そして人類の生存です。また、本講座で取り上げる映画に描かれている特定の出来事や現象は、19世紀後半の東ヨーロッパのユダヤ人のアメリカへの移民、第二次世界大戦後の科学の発展、1962年のキューバ危機です。この授業は英語で行われます。

授業の到達目標

Upon meeting this course’s requirements, a student will be able to:
(1) Familiarize himself/herself with audible conversation in English and develop proficiency in listening comprehension,
(2) Develop proficiency in analyzing the structures of conversational English and the meaning behind these structures in specific contexts,
(3) Acquire deeper knowledge of major historical events and phenomena in America, such as the post-Pogrom Jewish migration, a strong belief in science, and the Cuban missile crisis,
(4) Recognize basic human rights, inclusive society, and the very existence of humankind.

(1) 英語会話のリスニングに慣れ、聞き取る能力を高める
(2) 英語の会話言語の構造、並びに特定の文脈におけるこれら構造の背後にある意味を分析する能力を高める
(3) 迫害された欧州ユダヤ人のアメリカへの移民、科学への強い信仰、キューバ危機等、アメリカ史における主要イベント／現象についてより深く知る
(4) 基本的な人権、共生社会、並びに人類の生存そのものについて再認識する

Attendance, participation, and punctuality are essential for this course. Students need to be on time, prepared to learn, and willing to participate. Film screenings start promptly; therefore, to avoid disruption, you must be on time. Missing class or arriving late will affect your overall course grade. Three unexcused absences and you are out.

この講義では、授業への出席、積極的な参加、時間厳守が不可欠です。受講者はしっかり予習をしたうえで、時間通りに教室に来て、積極的に参加する必要があります。授業開始後すぐに映画視聴を開始しますので、混乱を避けるために、受講者には時間厳守が求められます。欠席や遅刻は成績に影響します。 正当な理由のない欠席3回で不合格となります。
