準備学修の内容

Assignments will vary depending on the speech technique focused on that week. Specific speech techniques covered this semester include: 1) eye contact; 2) body language; 3) voice; 4) use of props.

1. Eye contact (Weeks 1-3)
Write a speech and submit it to the professor via LMS at least 1 day prior to the start of class. You will not receive credit for speeches submitted the same day of class. The professor will project your speech on the whiteboard on the day you give your speech. You will be giving your speech while standing at the back of the classroom facing the whiteboard. This is to allow you to read your speech if needed, but not to rely on any printouts/notes while giving your speech. This aim is to look upwards and directly ahead while giving your speech.

2. Body language (Weeks 4-6)
A video link to a speech will be posted on LMS. Watch the video and study the body language that the speaker adopts. Mimic the speaker’s body language and rehearse this multiple times at home. On the day of class, the same speech video will be played and you will be asked to demonstrate the body language displayed in the video.

3. Voice (Weeks 8-10)
Short skits (plays) will be handed out in class and posted on LMS. Roles will be assigned to each student. Read through the skit and memorize the lines of your role. Certain lines will require you to convey specific emotions/feelings (e.g., curiosity, passion, determination, etc.). On the day of class, you and your group will perform your skit in front of class.

4. Props (Weeks 11-13)
You will be asked to make a creative speech based on the specific prop (Week 11: How to make a paper airplane; Week 12: The most interesting features on your smartphone; Week 13: The many uses of a paper clip/rubber band/pens, etc.). Make sure your speech effectively demonstrates the prop. Practice your speech multiple times before giving the same speech in class the following week.

Weekly assignments:
Each week video links to speeches and questions regarding those speeches will be uploaded onto LMS. The speeches in the videos will highlight the skills we will be focusing on the following week. You will be required to 1) watch the videos, closely observing the speaker’s demeanor, technique, etc. and 2) answer the questions provided. Upload your response to LMS in a Word document at least 1 day prior to class.
