授業の概要（ねらい）

　本講義では19世紀半ばから20世紀初頭の日本近代史を、国民国家建設と帝国建設の連続性に焦点をあてながら論じる。近代日本は自力の近代化と議会政治の導入を成し遂げた非西洋人の国であり、アジア人がアジア人を統治した植民地帝国でもあった。本講義では日本における議会政治の導入、西洋諸帝国との比較における日本帝国の特徴、戦前の日本の未熟な民主主義の失敗から我々は何を学べるか、といったテーマについて考察したい。

　　This lecture will provide Japanese history from the mid-19th to the early 20th century, focusing on the continuity of its nation state building and empire building. Modern Japan was a non-European state which voluntarily accomplished modernization and introduced parliamentary government. On the other hand, it was a colonial empire which ruled Asian neighbors. In this lecture, we will survey the Japanese way of introducing parliamentary government, characteristics of the Japanese empire as compared with that of Western empires, and lessons we can learn from pre-war Japan's failure of immature democracy.

以下の三点について説明することができる。
① 民主主義の経験を持たない近世日本人がどのようにして19世紀末に西洋的議会政治を導入することができたのか。
② 西洋諸帝国と比較して日本帝国の植民地支配にはどのような特徴がみられるか。
③ 戦前日本の未熟な民主主義の失敗から我々は何を学ぶことができるのか。　

By the end of the course, students should be able to explain
(1) How the Japanese, who have not had any experience of democracy in the early modern period, could introduce parliamentary government in the late-19th century.
(2) Characteristics of the Japanese empire as compared with that of Western empires.
(3) Lessons we can learn from pre-war Japan's failure of immature democracy.
